Union Carbide India Limited (UCIL) was established in 1934 and was a chemical company and eventually employed 9,000 people who worked at 14 plants in 5 divisions. It's 50.9% stake was owned by Union Carbide and Carbon Corporation (UCC) and 49.1% was owned by Indian investors including Government of India. In 1970 UCIL built a pesticide plant in Indian city of Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh due to which in 1984, Bhopal Gas Tragedy took place.
In 1984, when this tragedy took place, it had revenue of ₹2 billion . As it was a chemical company, of course it should follow the prescribed security guidelines so that no citizen is harmed if there's any mistake. Initially it took all the precautionary measures and followed all the safety guidelines but over the years carelessness towards security increased.
On the night of 2 and 3 December 1984, this carelessness paid off and numbers of innocent people became the victim of this incident. Huge black cloud of Methyl Isocyanate (MIC) moved towards the residential area through the help of wind which also blowing in the direction of those clean-handed people. It is claimed that over 16,000 people lost their life but on the official records it is just 3,787.
Warren Anderson is held responsible for this incident who was then the Chairman of Union Carbide and also the one who made the decision to decrease the budget that compromised with the security at the plant. After the plant leak, he was arrested by Bhopal Police but was released on bail on 7 December 1984. He instantly left India after signing a bond of ₹25,000 and never returned thereafter.
In 1992, he was declared a fugitive by the court of Bhopal as he failed to mark his presence repeatedly. In 1989, the ordered UCIL to pay $470 million to the victims that makes just ₹15,000 per head. After 19 years, in May 2003, Government of India made a formal request for Anderson's extradition. United States of America rejected India's request of extradition saying that it didn't met all the provisions.
After 1984, people are still bearing that pain. People who survived that night are suffering from different eye problems, neurological diseases, birth defects, respiratory disorders, cancer etc.. Toxic chemicals are still flowing in the water of Bhopal. The third generation is getting born with different diseases. The miscarriage rate of Bhopal is 7 times more than the average rate.
This story reminds all of us that how a little negligence can create a life long problem.
