The Story of Maharaja Jai Singh Prabhakar and Rolls Royce

Maharaja Jai Singh Prabhakar was the Maharaja (ruler) of Alwar (present day Rajasthan, India). He was a very bright and knowledgeable person. He ruled the state of Alwar from 1892 to 1937. He studied from Mayo College, Ajmer and was a very high regarded Indian scholar. He was also conferred with Delhi Durbar Gold Medal in both 1903 and 1911.

In the year 1920, he went for a visit to London, England along with all his people. One day he decided to travel all alone as normal person on the streets of London. He went out wearing normal English clothes and no one accompanied him. 

He saw a Rolls Royce showroom and went inside to know the price and specifications of the car. However, the salesman seeing a ordinary person that too Indian coming in the showroom didn't treat him well. The salesman asked him to leave saying that these cars are not for ordinary people like you. Frustrated Maharaja didn't said anything and silently left the showroom.

He returned back to his hotel and asked his people to inform the Rolls Royce showroom that Maharaja of Alwar is coming for an official visit. In excitement, all the staff made all the proper arrangement and it is even said that the red carpet welcome was arranged for the Maharaja. Maharaja Jai Singh came to the showroom donning his traditional attire and wearing all the jewelry. Staff of the showroom payed him respect while entrance.

Jai Singh spend around 2 hours in the showroom and at the end purchased all the cars present in the showroom at that point of time. He instantly completed the payment and even paid for their shipment to India. It is said that he also asked to send that salesman along with the cars for proper maintenance for which the Rolls Royce management agreed.

When all the cars reached Alwar, Maharaja Jai Singh ordered to give all these cars to Municipality of Alwar and it should be used to collect garages. The most luxurious cars were now used for garbage collection and this news reached all over the world. People stopped showing interest in buying Rolls Royce as everyone came to know that these cars are now used as garbage collector. Rolls Royce reputation decreased after this act and its stock also fell down.

Rolls Royce accepted their mistake and sent an apology to Maharaja Jai Singh and asked him to reverse his decision. Also, they will send 6 more cars to him for free. Maharaja accepted their requested and ordered to stop using Rolls Royce for garbage collection.
