A 13 year old kid, Alan Turing was sent to a large boarding school. The inflexible education system there gave his mind little encouragement, so he studied advanced scientific ideas on his own.
In school, Turing became attracted to another student, Christopher Marcom, who died unexpectedly from tuberculosis (a bacterial disease). His death created an emotional turbulence inside Turing which led him to think boundlessly about human brain which later went to determine his works.
After completing his schooling, Turing got a scholarship from King's College, Cambridge. He flourished in a culture that stimulated his scientific interests. At the age of 22, he got selected for a fellowship.
Turing published a paper in 1936 which is now recognized as the foundation of Computer Science. He invented the idea of a 'Universal Machine' that could decode and perform any set of instructions.
After few years, Turing joined Britain's code-breaking department where he oversaw the effort to decrypt ciphers generated by Nazi Germany's Enigma machine, which the Nazis themselves considered impassable.
Turing lived during a time when all male homosexual activity was considered illegal. When his affair with a young man came to light he was arrested for 'gross indecency'. He pled guilty and opted to undergo chemical castration instead of serving time in jail.
