- Sometimes referred as 'The Bard of Bengal', Rabindranath Tagore was awarded the Nobel prize in the field of Literature (Bengali) for his work Gitanjali and with this achievement he became the first non-European and first lyricist to win Nobel prize in the field of Literature.
- Tagore started writing poetry when he was eight years old and at the of 16, he released his first substantial poems under the pseudonym Bhanusimha (Sun Lion).
- He is one of the two Indian who were awarded the Nobel Prize under British India.
2. C.V.Raman - 1930
- With his student K.S.Krishnan Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman discovered the scattering of light which of later renamed into Raman Effect. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics for this discovery and became the first Asian to receive Nobel Prize in any branch of science.
- 28 February is celebrated as National Science Day every year to commemorate the Raman effect. Also, he was one out of the three first recipients of Bharat Ratna (India's highest civilian honor) in 1954 alongside C.Rajagopalachari and Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan.
3. Amartya Sen - 1998
- Amartya Sen was born in Bengal and his name Amartya (meaning immortal) was given by Rabindranath Tagore. Kshiti Mohan Sen, his grandfather (his mother's father) was close associate of Rabindranath Tagore.
- He was awarded Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences in 1988 and was honored with India's highest civilian honor, Bharat Ratna in 1999 for his efforts in Welfare Economics. He was also awarded with 2020 Peace Prize of the German Book Trade (Friedenspreis des Deutschen Buchhandels) for addressing topics related to global justice.
4. Kailash Satyarthi - 2014
- He is the initiator of many social activist organization like Global March against Child Labour, Global Campaign for education, Kailash Satyarthi Children Foundation and Bachpan Bachao Andolan in which his team liberated around 90,000 children from slavery and and trafficking.
- As per the official website of of Bachpan Bachao Andolan "efforts are dedicated to our martyrs Adarsh Kishore, Dhoom Das and Kalu Kumar who laid down their lives and paved the way for the freedom of enslaved and trafficked children."
- In 2014, he was the co-recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize, along with Malala Yousafzai, "for their struggle against the suppression of children and young people and for the right of all children to education."
