At the age of 4, Messi's football journey began when he he Grandoli, a local club where his father used to coach him. It is said that the earliest influence of football on Messi came from his grandmother. Since her death, he reportedly started celebrating his goals by pointing to the sky in the tribute of his grandmother.
After a year in Grandoli, aged only 6, Messi joined Newell's Old Boys, one of the biggest clubs in his home city of Rosario. He had dreamt of playing there when he used to watch their games with his family. After his 6-year stay there, he had racked up around 500 goals!
At the age of 11, Messi was diagnosed with growth hormone deficiency. This turned out to be an advantage for him to be quicker and more agile than the rest.
In September 2000, 13-year old Messi arrived for a 15-day trial at FC Barcelona.
Barcelona scout Charley Rexach remembers that within a few minutes of viewing Messi's game, he had decided that he wanted him at the club.
Rexach later met Messi's agents for lunch at a tennis club. He however did not have any paper on him at the time, so he found a napkin nearby and drew a contract.
This is how a journey started with a napkin and rest his history.
